Anxiety & Depression

Symptoms of anxiety and / or depression are a common presentation at Headstart.

Symptoms of depression might include a loss of interest in activities that were previously enjoyable, a sense of sadness, changes in appetite and weight, changes in sleep, low energy, poor motivation, changes in concentration, memory and decision making and a sense of worthlessness.  Anxiety is a broad term that covers different specific types of anxiety.  For example, symptoms of panic might include a racing heart, sweating, shaking, shortness of breath, nausea, dizziness and hot flushes.  Anxiety may be generalised or related to specific objects or situations.  Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is also a form of anxiety.  Fortunately, anxiety and depression are very amenable to psychological treatment.   A psychologist at Headstart would discuss the psychological treatment that best fits for you.  Common treatment options available at Headstart are Cognitive Behavioural Treatment (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), as they have both shown to be highly effective in the treatment of anxiety and depression.
